Direct System of Numbering Yarns and Calculations
Direct System of Yarn Count:
In this process the count is based on the number of weight units in a length unit. Thus the size or bulkiness of the yarn is directly proportional to the count number. A coarser yarn will have a higher count number while a finer yarn will have a lower count number. The system is used for very fine and very coarse yarns.
I have also published article on "Indirect System of Yarn Numbering and Calculation"
In the table below is given the length and weight units used in important direct systems.
Table:
Calculations: We have,
Weight in Appropriate unit
Count = ………………………………… ………. (1)
Length in Appropriate unit
Therefore, by cross multiplication, we get the following:-
Weight in appropriate unit
Length in appropriate unit = …………………………… ….. (2)
Count
Or, Weight in appropriate unit = Length in appropriate unit X Count ……..(3)
Denier System.-
The weight unit is 1 denier and the length unit is a hank of 520 yards. In the English denier system, while 0.05 gram and 450 meters are the weight and length units respectively in Metric denier system.
Therefore,
Weight in deniers
Count in English denier system = …………………………… ……….. (4)
Length in yards/520
Weight in deniers
= 520 X ……………………… …….. (5)
Length in yards
Weight in grains / 0.82
Or, Count in English denier system = ……………………… ………. (6)
Length in yards / 520
520 Weight in grains
= …………… X ………………… ……… (7)
0.82 Length in yards
Weight in grammes / 0.05
Count in Metric denier system = …………………………… ……….. (8)
Length in meters / 450
450 Weight in Grammes
= ………….. X …………………………
0.05 Length in meters
Weight in Grammes
= 9000 X ………………………… …………. (9)
Length in meters
By cross multiplication, we have:-
Weight in grammes
Length in meters = 9000 X ……………………… ………… (10)
Count
Length in meters X Count
Or, Weight in grammes = ……………………………… ………….. (11)
9000
The metric denier system is more widely used than the English denier system.
Example: 1. If 1350 meters of silk yarn weigh 7…. grammes, what is the count of the yarn metric denier system?
Solution:
Applying formula (3),
Weight in appropriate unit = Length in appropriate unit X Count
We have,
450 7.5
Count = ………. X ……………
0.05 1350
= 50 denier (ANS)
Example 2. What is the weight of 270 meters of nylon yarn whose count is 200 denier (metric) ?
Solution:
Applying formula (8),
Weight in grammes / 0.05
Count in Metric denier system = ………………………………
Length in meters / 450
We have,
0.05
Weight in grammes = Count X Length in meters X ……
450
= 6 grammes (ANS)
Example 3. Calculate the count of 260 yards of rayon yarn which weighs 50 deniers.
Solution:
Applying the formula (4),
Weight in deniers
Count in English denier system = ………………………
Length in yards/520
We have,
50
Count = ……………
260/520
= 100 deniers (English). (ANS)
