What does it means by sliver?
Fiber will called as sliver when they are in long bundled shape. At the time of yarn spinning this form of fiber is used.How sliver is made from fiber?
Well for making sliver fiber needs to go through some processing. Carding and combing are such processes which are responsible for making sliver. We know raw fibres are neither disciplined nore clean. But for spinning like operation we need to ready clean properties materials. Carding and combing do this job. Fibres are drawn into long stripes where fibres are in parallel to each other. The sliver gotten after carding and combing will be called as carded and combed sliver respectively.
What is hank?
Hank is one kind of yarn package where yarn are in coil form. This package is mostly suitable for using in hand loom. The measurement of yarn in one hank varies according to yarn type.
Example
For cotton and silk 1 hank is equal to 768 meter, whether for linen its 270 meters only.
Worsted yarn 570 meter equals 1 hank

Ultimately this formula goes as,
Sliver length in yard x 7000
Sliver hank = ..............................................
Sliver weight in grain x 840
MATHEMATICAL PROBLEM-01:
The weight of 12 yards of sliver is 600 grain, Calculate the hank ?
Solution:
Given data:
Sliver length=12 yds
Sliver weight=600 grains
Hank = ?
Then,
12 x 7000
Sliver hank = .............................
840 x 600
= 0.1666
=0.17 (ANS)

Find out the weight of one yard sliver of 0.15 hank ?
Solution:
Given,
Sliver hank = 0.15
Sliver length = 1 yds
Then as we know,
Sliver length in yard x 7000
Sliver hank = ..............................................
Sliver weight in grain x 840
Sliver length in yard x 7000
Or, sliver weight in grain = ...................................................
840 x sliver hank
1 x 7000
= ............................
840 x 0.15
= 55.30 grain (ANS)
